most playful, kid friendly birdI need a real character2007-11-24 17:23:29

What bird is really playful but still okay around kids 6+? My tiel is sweet but doesn't 'DO' much. I see all these toys (paper, bells) and know my tiel won't play with them much. He doesn't do much with all the ones he has, just chews a wee bit.

Do you yourself have a bird? If so, how playful is it and does it nip?

birds have different personalities just like humans. choosing a sweet bird is sometimes tidious. i have 5 birds and recommend getting a baby love bird. as long as it gets human interaction everyday, they remain sweet. mine is 15yrs old and has never had a mate, although he has plenty of company! on the other hand, we also have a quaker parrot who is a riot to talk to, but bites really hard!

That poor bird is lonely and depressed. I will bet you don't do much *with* it either. Birds are social animals and absolutely need interaction with others. For heaven's sake, get him a companion. I bet you will see plenty of activity then. And once in a while, interact with him, close the house and let him/them out of the cage. Get a CD of bird sounds and let him listen, if you haven't the time/energy or inclination to sit and talk with him at length.

Hi,I have owned many different birds in my years andin all honesty I believe it would be better to get a 6 year old a hamster or rabbit or some small pet.Parrots of all types can bite hard and do damage through jealousy.Parrots are usually one person owners.Please think it over.

That's odd, my cockatiels are extremely active and have lots of personality. A lovebird might be a good idea, but there's a chance he will only choose one person to love. My lovebird is friendly with everyone but he's cool that way.

I don't recommend birds that are too small because I've heard of children accidentally crushing parakeets from holding them too tight.
