my 2 1/2 year old rooster has suddenly got mean Why2007-11-24 17:23:30

He is a 2 1/2 yr old silky.He runs w/ 22 hens and 3 other juvenille roosters(under 6 months). He was never aggressive. In the past 3 days he runs and tries to jump on you. The chickens are in a 20x20 pen and our allowed to roam free 2 hrs. in the evening.

Answers:

Most likely it's due to the juvenile roosters that are starting to reach maturity. Otherwise, maybe your rooster is just a cok*!

Many animals become more aggressive [especially males] when they reach sexual maturity or there's another male they consider a threat to their territory. I'm not sure about roosters,but you could try to separate him from other males. Good luck.

i would consider separating because some one could call the law and eventually u may be charged with * fighting -

where we really learn is it the size or the strength

is it how long u last or the length

while i dont know about roosters could it be because the hens or one of the hens is sick or going to have an egg? i dunno he may feel the need to protect them if hes not aggressive towards the other birds

he picked up after my son, when he got grown we let him run with our bantams, then he got mean, he'd jump anything that came in the yard, he wasn't afraid of anything, he jumped meter readers, mailmen, deliveryperson, etc Everybody knew him

one day we came home and he was dead in our driveway,

I guess he jumped on the wrong person

we sure do miss him
