has a lot of toys. I was told that a african grey parrot should not have his beak trimmed. What to do?

Answers:

String up a lava rock toy for him, and if it doesn't work, take him to the vet and have him checked for Psittacine Beak and Feather Disease. Hopefully he just needs something to chew on.

Baby birds always have the pointiest beaks and nails of all. It may take a while before it wears down to its adult "look".

My son and soon to be-daughter in law have birds and they have those white stone that keeps their bills to a normal length. They are mounted to the sides of the cage. You can check with the pet store in the area and see what they recommend. Good Luck to you and your feathered friends.

We use special perches that are made to help birds work on their beaks and keep their toenails from growing too long between trims. They have them at any pet store that sells bird supplies. Also investigate some toys for your Grey that will work his beak.wooden toys made to chew on, etc. If all that fails have your bird checked by your vet. Overgrowth of the beak prevents the bird from being able to feed easily and could be a sign of illness. Good luck!

It is probably normal. Get a good book on Greys and compare. Beak abnormalities are usually caused by malnutrition or injury. Greys do have very long pointed beaks.

I have had my Parrot for 21 years now, take him to a vet who specializes in exotic birds and he will drummel his beak (yes with the tool), do not try this at home, your bird could be getting too much calcium and other vitamins that encourage beak growth. Check your yellow pages or ask around for a good vet.

YES! give him a cuttlebone. But Greys have long pointy beaks in comparison to other parrots in the first place.

give him lots of wood toys to chew. i have one and have not had a problem. also take him to a bird vet for a check up. they have a pointed beck, so it may be normal.
