my cockatiel has laid eggs with her mate, wat should i do

i have a mature cockatiel hen, and i have just moved her into a big cage with a mature boy. They have already mated and have eggs. Should i take the eggs out and handrear them because i have heard that some femail cocks dont look after there babies and let them die. But i also dont want to disturb her and her eggs. What should i do? cheerz xxxx

It sounds like this is your hen's first clutch. If it is the first clutch, I would STRONGLY suggest letting the birds keep the eggs. If you don't give the female the opportunity to care for the eggs you'll never know what kind of parent she'll be. Even if it means you loose this first set of eggs, it's a small price to pay for knowledge of how your birds will parent. You can always hand incubate the next set of eggs if necessary. But if you can get the parents to do this, it's well worth it. There's nothing as bad as having to monitor eggs and then handfeed chicks from birth. And, once you pull the eggs/babies you can't really put them back and expect the birds to reestablish caring for them.

If you do decide to leave the eggs with the birds, you should watch to make sure the eggs are being incubated and that the male is feeding the female while she sits on the eggs. If the female is not being fed enough, she'll often abandon the nest (note - there's a difference between leaving the nest for five minutes and abandoning it). If the female is not getting enough food and you want to intervene, you can remove the male and buy some handfeeding formula and mix it with soft regular food (like mashed beans/eggs/etc) and feed your female yourself.
