Please listen to "dances"..she has given you the correct info. I am thinking the bird you are talking about it feathered? It has probably left the nest on it's own and the parents are caring for it. It is pretty late in the season for small unfeathered babies to still be about.

If you know where the nest is, put the baby back. Contrary to the old wives' tale, the mother will not "smell human" on the baby and kick it out. If the baby has feathers (rather than just down), it may have been making some of its first attempts at flight; in that case, the mother is probably still feeding it, despite it not being in the nest, but you can put it back in the nest even then if you know where the nest is. If it still has down AND you don't know where the nest is, contact a wildlife rehab center; most birds fall under one or another protected species acts (either federal or state) and it is technically not legal for you to keep it. A rehabilitator knows how to care for it, and what to feed it. Until you can get it to the rehab center, put it in a cardboard box (not a bird cage) with toweling or newspaper in the bottom; keep it in a warm area, keeping the box covered, and away from noise and light.

hi doris you do not give the approx age of the magpie,if its only in it's down(the fluffy feathers)it will require a crop milk substitute every two hours but if it's feathers are the black and white ones it will require additional foods like raw minced meat.
