I bought one recently and it seems to stick one of its nails into its nostrils as if its itchy or somehing, any answers on this AND any other info for me greatly appreciated. The bird is young, only 4/5 months, I have it 2 days.
Answers:derbyan parrots are wonderful birds
they are a member of the ring neck club. males and females look similar, but with this species, the male has a red beak where the female has a black one. it's my understanding they are "fair" talkers but not the best.
as far as the nose picking, it could just be that he's a baby and exploring what body parts he has and what does what where . or, you could take him to an avian vet and see what they say.
congrats on your Derby!!
I have a Alexandrian, a sub-species, and they are pretty much the average ringneck but not as nasty natured. Mine does it too from time to time. The Vet said that they itch like we do and found nothing in the exam, If his nose is red and inflamed that needs attention. (Hard to see with those beaks and even harder for you because the nares are dark. But have a look to see if all looks well. If no sneezing is with that, even better!
Nostril picking seems to be normal for this species, along with many others;nothing to be worried about unless there is obvious swelling and/or discharge, sneezing, etc.
