This was a really good question, (O: I had to work to answer it (O:

Haast鈥檚 eagle, New Zealand giant eagle

Haast's Eagle (Harpagornis moorei) was a massive eagle that once lived on the South Island of New Zealand. It is also known as Harpagornis Eagle. After the extinction of the teratorns, the Haast's Eagle was the largest bird of prey in the world. It is believed that M膩ori called it Pouakai; the often-cited name Hokioi (or hakawai) refers to the aerial display of the New Zealand Snipe, specifically the extinct South Island subspecies (Miskelly, 1987). As the hokioi was only known by the loud noise it produced, the M膩ori assumed it to be a large, powerful bird and were wont to describe it as a gigantic eagle (the largest flying bird they knew of).

We want to know if the Haast鈥檚 eagle can't be brought back using ancient DNA into a golden eagle (we have a male seaman doner and a female egg layer that can be used) now that would be fun to fly.

The reason it became extinct was because it used to hunt a larger cousin of the ostrich and when humans landed in new Zeland they started hunting the ostrich bird too and hunted to extinction, the Haast's had no food to eat so started hunting the humans, so the humans started hunting the Haast's and wiped it out.
