what type of wood would i use to make my own bird toys
i would like to know what type of wood to buy to make bird tosys for my macaw
Answers:Hello:
I used to have 8 parrots, so I know what you are
thinking about. No sense at all in making toys out
of soft wood that parrots will chew to bits in a matter
of minutes.
I used PECAN wood for all my climbing poles,
ladders and toys because Pecan has a disagreeable
taste to it. Birds do not like the taste of it in their mouth,
but will otherwise bat it around, pull on it, shake it, etc.
You did not mention your locality or country of residence, so I am not to sure what to recommend to you for a
source of wood. But as to character of the wood, I suggest a non-poisonous, hard wood, with a bitter taste.
You can use all kinds of vegetable food coloring dyes
to paint the toys and make them attractive to the birds.
If the dye is safe for us to eat on our food, chances
are fairly good that it is okay for the birds also.
If you are not a USA resident and are unable to find
suitable wood EMail your shipping address to me
at zahbudar at yahoo dot com, and I will try to gather
up some PECAN branches for you and send them
to you. You pay for shipping charges.
Regards,
Zah
Hard wood. VERY HARD.
The hardest Oak doesn't even cut it.
I like ironwood and manzanita. But you have to work it with a grinder!
oak wood.
