whats the best kind of talking parrots to buy as pets2007-11-24 17:26:10

If you want a bird for a pet the Cockatoo would be the best. If brought up right they love to be cuddled. But they are not good talkers.

Hope that helps

i would say the double yellow head, african gray, macaw those i have found to be the best ..although i did have a nandy conure that would say a few words . good luck.no matter what parrot you get though just know they take alot of love and care and need alot of human contact.if your not ready to have this pet for long dont get a birds they live longggggggg lives.
For mimicing speech, without a doubt it is the African Gray. Mine immitates everything she hears! My Macaw on the other hand, says fewer words, and not as clearly, but she knows exactly what those words mean. For instance she calls me Momma, and if I am heating something in the microwave she will say, Yummmm, hot?? Or she will tell me "Step up" when she wants me to hold her. She is a funny little scamp. But the Gray is only a year old and she can say far more that the macaw, and she does associate words with people. Such as, my boyfriend calls the gray "pretty girl" so when she sees him she says "pretty girl". She immitates my dachshund so well that I am constantly going to the back door to let him in. The dog now thinks I am crazy calling him in when he is right behind me.
I have an african grey and I LOVE him. He's the coolest. BUT..PLEASE RESEARCH before you buy. Your bigger parrots are a LIFETIME responsibility. Most will probably outlive you, or come close, not knowing your age. This isn't something you get and get tired of and give away. These birds get very attatched to their families, and you can really traumatize them by getting rid of them. They have certain requirements, and NEED attention! Please don't take your decision lightly. There are bird rescues that are full of birds, because people bought them without knowing what they were getting into. Please be knowledgeable! :-)
I agree with another commenter to start off with a smaller bird like a parakeet (budgie) or cockatiel. The larger parrots most likely to talk can make a LOT of noise. What will you do if your bird screams painfully loudly the entire time you're home? What will your neighbors think? Are you and your family willing to find a new apartment if your landlord evicts you?
