normal birds (daytime) bed down during sunset i have loads in my garden first sign of light going down they head for the trees I also have two owls and they are the same sunrise starts they head to roost

Birds always sleep with one eye open and one closed. Just in case of danger.

They bed down at night in bushes & trees, wherever they can feel safe. We even have a number of birds that sleep under our house & redwood deck.

I used to live on the third floor of an apartment and in the evening I would see them coming in the thousands and going into the trees and bamboo next to my apartment. You could hear them sort of settle down as it got dark. Then early in the mornings they would leave - not all at once, but a flock at a time. So interesting.

the nap more than full on sleep. the often awake at loud sounds or strange things that startle them. also a way to tell a bird is sleeping is they are often standing on one leg, and their head is often under a wing or facing bacwards resting on a shoulder.

It depends on the species. As others have noted here, the night hunters such as Owls hunt at night and sleep in tree holes during the day.
