I found several dead birds in my garden during the hot weather even though I put out dishes of water. Generally I think that natural predators and scavengers in the wild take care of dead creatures, but in suburban areas it is up to us to do the clearing up if you don't want a load of flies.

some die over lakes, sink and are eaten by fish, but mostly wild animals and county pest control keep them fairly cleaned up. We have a dead seagul prob at the moment though, they are everywhere. Seems most the feral dogs are dragging them off to eat though.

They fall on the ground for insects vultures and other animals to get to them to eat or even possibly homes. If for some reason no one gets to them they decay and weather into the ground.

I gave a very satisfactory answer to this same question yesterday.
I have seen MANY dead birds on the ground in different places and situations over the course of my lifetime: dead crows, jays, pigeons, robins, turkies, grouse, starlings, chickadees.. I think that you just have to spend a lot of time outdoors and really look for them to notice them. Their bodies DO get eaten up rather quickly by scavengers and/or decomposed by scavanging insects- bird bodies are surprisingly small and don't take long for beetles to devour.
Nice to find other people think like me. When I asked that question at work my colleagues looked at me as if I were mad. Still don't know the answer though.
