why do budgies pull their feathers2007-11-24 17:27:00

well i have a white budgie that trys to pull his feathers

and how do you tell if it has a broken wing my bird is only a few months old.

Answers:

Several reasons.

1. the bird may look a bit rough (lots of pin shaped feathers)

this will clear as the bird matures.it will preen itself.

2. You can help (if the bird does not fear your hand) by rolling each pin feather gently (like rolling a cigarette) back and forth, just a little. The feathers will lose their waxlike casing and open up gradually.

3. Nervous impulse or stress

4. Dry skin or mites (but I doubt this one)

It is like OCD for birds. They get into the destructive habit of constantly pulling out their feathers.The major medical causes can be a change in hormone levels, parasites, malnutrition, and bacterial or fungal infections of the skin . Or it could be also due to stress.

Mine doesn't pull. Take the critter to an aviary - a bird vet.

sometimes they do preen their feathers..make sure budgie is actually pulling, not preening..because when they preen their tail feathers, it sure does look like pulling!

Some birds pull their feathers because they are molting, if they are a pair, birds will pull their feathers out to build a nest. It could be linked to stress so if you keep moving him around from room to room or perhaps added something new to the room he is in, that's a possibility. If they are bored, they over-preen themselves, so make sure he's got plenty of toys to keep his mentality going, he needs to be occupied.

I've been working with exotic birds and reptiles for 4 yrs, and mostly the reason while birds pull their feathers out is because of stress. Or it may be molting (shedding of the feathers). And to see if your bird has a broken wing or not, he/she will have its wing not fully opened. Since you said your budgie is only a few months old, everything is new to them. To cut down the stress, at night time put a towl over the cage, but not covering completely.
