why do cockatiels bang there beak2007-11-24 17:27:01Answers:

Birds do it all the time. They like showing off to a mate to get their attention.

Nothing to worry about.

Because they can't clap their hands.
mine doesnt
I used to have one called Homer :P lol and it never did that :S
Easy. No one else wants to bang the dickless birds What are they supposed to do?.
I thing they are cleaning them and sharpening them. by rubbing their beaks against the cage, it's like using a wet-stone.
It's a defense kinda of thing, it might feel intimidated or scared or territorial. I'm assuming that's your case, especially if it hisses when it does this. Mine will do this sometimes in the middle of the night when she's covered up and it's dark, if she hears someone coming close to her cage.
is it a male?

my male did that, i was told it is a sign of dominance.

Males will pound their beak as a mating call to get the females attention.
Do you mean that your tiel does it against the cage bars and stares at you? That's for attention! It's very clever. I love when birds do that. They don't have hands or else they'd shake or knock on the bars.

If you just mean rubbing, they do it to clean.

Sorry again, Heather you crack me up! After a few years I realized it meant either, LET ME OUT, if he did it in his cage, or GIVE ME SOME ATTENTION, if he was out. When he is on my shoulder it means take me outside or scratch my head. Yeah he's trained me well.
