why do older budgies stand on top of baby budgies when they come out of the nest
when the baby budgies start to leave the nest the parents start to stop seeing them as their babies. The hen could be doing this to stop them returning to 'her' nest box.
The male might be doing so to keep his partner and chicks inside the box safe. If there is any biting or pulling of feathers you need to remove the baby from them.
Also they might be starting the second clutch already and want to keep the nest clear of the older babies.
Also a small box at the bottom of the cage can be a hiding spot for the babies to get away from the parents if need be.
If this is in the aviary and not the parents, then a flock does have a hierarchy system and the others can be enforcing their rank to the new birds.
What is a budgie? Have you maybe thought it could be a mommie budgie keeping a baby budgie warm?
im not sure but my guess is proablly to keep it warm
It is just to show them they are the boss they will eat first, and that they will listen when spoken to.
They also show seniority, to the little ones
I would say that it is keeping it warm and also protecting it. Maybe something feels threatening to the budgie, like the male budgie, I have seen doves do this also. Plus when your hand reaches in there, they just want their babies to be safe. This is most likely what it is if the female is the one doing this and also if she tries to nip at you when you reach in her cage.
