why has there been a decrease in bird population
When birds don't have a place to nest and care for their young, or there is insufficient food resources, birds will simply not breed. I think loss of habitat is THE major player in the decline of all wildlife population.
Because Dick Cheney keeps shooting them :-(
There'd be even fewer if he didn' miss and hit the occasional person instead. :D Actually, I blame pesticides.
because our population is increasing.
Now a days birds biological cycle is highly affected by infrared rays in the atmospheres which is for mobile /cell phone use. There is terrible decrease in population of birds like House sparrows. Also one more imp.reason is pollution in the air.i.e.gases like Co2,So2 and other poisonous gases due to vehicles and mills ,factories ets.
Many other parameters like decrease in population of trees, farms ,lakes which are essential for them is vanishing .
Things like humans chopping down trees to build things doesnt help.
But if your talking about birds around your house, the answer is cats!
Irrisponsible cat owners let their cats out and cats are in plague proportions as far as im concerned. They turn feral way too easy.
There is no simple answer to this question.
Bird populations are greatly influenced by lack of habitat. There are many species that have very specific requirements for breeding habitat. Human development encroaches on forest, prairie, wetlands, shoreline, ect. Fragmentation of forests not only causes a loss of nesting habitat, but also allows more access to nests by brood parasites like Brown-headed Cowbirds.
There are also serious problems for neo-tropical migrants on their wintering grounds in Central and South America. The destruction of rain forest has a very serious impact on birds that summer and breed in North America.
Other environmental factors are pollution, mass use of pesticides, and the changing weather due to global warming. I have been a birder for a long time. In discussion with other birders, we all agree that bird numbers are dropping every year. The National Audubon Society had a list of birds that are in serious trouble.
