will an older cockatiel get along with a new younger cockatiel2007-11-24 17:27:41

Joey is about 18 years old, his mate just died. Will he accept a younger cockatiel??

Or should we get 2 younger cockatiels, one male one female, to put with Joey??

Really it depends on the bird, I think I'd get the new birds and a new cage. Keep Joey in his cage, and put the new cage beside him with the new birds. He may attack the new bird(s) if they are put into his cage! After they get use to each other(may take months) you may be able to introduce them outside the cage, and then eventually they may live together!

I'd suggest getting him a new companion.

Make sure that he is a temed bird(means, get a nice bird from a home)

Make sure it is a male.

Teils stick with there mate for life.As suppriseing as it seems, Joey may ignore her, or hurt her, or he may even kill her.

Sounds ruff, but if Joey's girl just died, make sure you bond with him, realy close. You should then after a week get a new cage and a male tamed cokcatiel. you should atleast let them chatter for a month or so, then let them both on top of the new b irds cage, make sure to poosh Joey back if he tried to get bak onto his cage.

hi, i used to train exotic birds years ago.and even had quite a few cockateils. depending on heartbroken he is hell accept her. they grieve just like we do. ive never seen one kill another or anything like that. i did however put a younger male with an older female once and it took awhile for them to get used to each other.and she lived a long time after. i think it just depends on the bird. patti.

Yes they will get along. They will not get along if you put a male and female in the cage. They will fight over the female. One bird either sex will do.
