1 1/2 year old cat lethargic2007-11-25 11:29:23

On Monday our AC went on the blink due to the awful heatwave we are experiencing in AL. The inside temp reached 100+ before service tech could make repairs. Our short haired cat seems fine but our long haired cat has become lethargic and won't eat or drink. This started yesterday morning (Tues.) and hasn't changed. He is alert to sudden movement and sounds, but doesn't go/come investigate as he usually does. I've checked for swelling and bumps best I could with all the hair and found nothing of significance. He IS shedding more so than usual to which I attribute to stress. His eyes aren't dilated and his skin color is pink.

Could this be heat stress or exhaustion? Something else?

I really don't have the funds (AC repairs) to let a vet check him out until Friday.

Answers:

Sounds like it may be diabetes. I was in the the same situation and when I took my cat in to the vet they said he did(lethargy is one of the main symptoms). Good luck!

If the inside temp was really that high, than your cat is suffering from heat exhaustion. Place a cool towel around your cats body to help lower his temperature. Make sure that he has plenty of cool water to drink as he could also be dehydrated. If he starts to display any of the following signs, get him to the vet asap. He could be having a heat stroke.

Rapid panting

Bright red tongue

Red or pale gums

Thick, sticky saliva

Depression

Weakness

Dizziness

Vomiting - sometimes with blood

Diarrhea

Shock

Coma
