ok so my cat just had 5 babues today!! im soo happy ! but... before that the mom spent a lot of time outside during the last 2 weeks so she caught a looot of fleas!! i wanna get rid of the before she gives them to the new babies what can i do that wont affect her since shes breast feeding and wants to be with her babies?? also i want to know what i can do to help the mom since she had 5 babies?? and how long do i have to wait so i can have her neutered??

Answers:

The first thing you want to do is not bother the mother, or she may relocate the kittens to a safer location, and you may not find that. I have posted a link on newborn kitten care. While the mother is doing all the work, reading it may help you not overreact and help you recognize when things are going well and not well.

Your kitties will likely have fleas and ear mites, and possibly worms. Those are vet issues and probably will have to wait a bit. For the mother, buy some kitten food, as she will need the extra nourishment.

At age 8 weeks, kittens are generally weaned. Then, her milk should dry up. She probably can be spayed (females are spayed) anytime thereafter. Waiting too long may result in another batch of kittens.

Around 8 weeks, assuming there are no health problems, you want to bring the kittens to a vet, and you can discuss spaying at that time.

If you see problems, seek a vet help immediately, as kittens can quickly go down hill.

before you listen to someone on here...you need to call your vet. if you do not have an established vet, just go to the phone book and pick a number. they will tell you what you need to do. vets know your animals best and they know how to safely treat them... many people on here just write down things to get points. good luck with your new kittens :)

i think spaying your cat might have to wait 3-6 months after giving birth.double check with a vet. as for the fleas.on the kittens the only thing my vet said to do was to buy DAWN original dishsoap and wash them in that and you might wanna try a flea comb you can get it at walmart or a petstore and just comb them out and stick them in dawn/water mixture so the fleas drown. oh and only wash the kittens every two days you don't wanna dry out their skin...good luck!

definantly ask a vet what you should do specifically. fleas can and will get very bad very fast and may kill your kittens.

Leave the care of the babies to the mommy. The mommy does not like her babies to be touched by anyone. Sometimes if you touch the babies that small the mother will abandon them often even kill them. The vet will tell you about flea protection. Do not bathe the kittens.
