Go to the University- it is a LOT cheaper than going to any local vets. The procedure is done by students, but they are supervised by a practicing Veterinarian, who is also a teacher (and therefore should be one of the best).
For instance: a procedure for my horse costs 3,000 where I live, and 1200 at the university- same drugs and everything.
I live a half-hour away from Mad-town, and it costs about $90 to spay a female cat. Then add shots, and you're at about 150.
Neutering a male is cheaper, but shots are just as expensive.
What costs a lot is the TEST for feline Leukemia and the shot to prevent it if the cat doesn't have it. It's fatal, and infectious, so the vaccine is good.
Good luck--take the cat to a vet in Columbus or other small towns for a better price AND better treatment.
