Outside cat or inside cat

Outside cat or inside cat2007-11-25 12:24:59

All my life i had never heard of an indoor cat. The first time i did, v recently i thought it was the crulest thing ever. Ive just bought a kitten and have been researching the facts. After hearing that on average cats live 5 years longer if they are house cats i cant help considering it. Do you think its possible to have a happy house cat or does the freedom factor outweigh the danger factor.??..This being cars, fatal diseases, fleas, Catnapping etc

It might seem a little unfair to keep a hunter away from the pray ;)

But you have a kitten..and all it knows is what you expose it to. Don't feel like your taking something away from the little guy, you're really giving back to him/her.at least 5-10 years more!

There are a lot of things you can do for your indoor cat. There are kitty condos-they love them. Also many toys. Try a new toy every other week. And food. There is so many good brands of cat food out there.also treats!

A cat sleeps for 12-20 hours a day. The rest of the time, they eat. Just give your kitten love and your time and you can't go wrong!

Good Luck

Indoor cat, all the way. My cat could care less about the outdoors. Rarely looks outside, never trys to go outside.

You cat would definitly have a longer life span being an indoor cat. I think it is so sad when I see cats on the side of the road, hit by a car. In our city it is a by-law to put cats on a leash if they are outside.

get a cat flap then you can have both
My cats are indoor. They are happy and fat and sweet little animals.
my cats only been with us a week and is itching to get out and i know there'll be risks involved but thats nature and i gotta give him a bit of freedom eventually i think. i hope he never gets run over or anything terrible like that but also don't want him depressed and bored indoors. i'm sure there are many happy house cats but mine i don't think is suited. i don't think he'll be himself properly.
I think it very much depends n the breed of cat. Persian, Siamese and Burmese for example are bred as lazy housecats - they do nothing but sleep and eat. Whereas, a moggy, tabby etc will have a wild streak and will want to roam and explore. They will be bored stupid in a house - unless you live in a very large mansion. Also, cats like to eat grass - don't ask why but they do. They also like to climb. If you have a bog-standard kittycat then let it out. you can always cat proof your garden with netting around the top of the fences - so your cat then can't go any further than your garden.
Just let your cat choses if it wants to be indoors or outdoors. As long as the cat is happy.
For myself, having an indoor cat is the only way to go. It's true, there are just too damned many things that can happen to them outside.stray dogs, tom cats, diseases, cars, fisher cats.
