If you put your kittens nose in their potty mess wont they recanize the scent and keep on going there.

Answers:

Never rub an animal's nose in poop. That does not work and is cruelty to animals. Just keep the litter box clean, and every time he eats, put him in it. If you see kitty looking like he wants to go, put him in the box. He will get the message.

NEVER RUB AN ANIMAL'S NOSE IN THEIR MESS!! That does not housebreak them, it just teaches them to fear you. That is the equivalent of toilet training a toddler by rubbing a dirty diaper on their face.

When the cat soils a place other than the litter box, clean the mess up and disinfect it so the bacteria doesn't linger and make the place smell. When he's looking like he wants to potty, or sniffing around the area where he soiled, pick him up and put him in his box. He'll get the message.

Cats don't learn that way. What you want to do is set them in the litter box and dig their little front paws around to simulate burying their waste. We've had 5 cats (3 at present) and it has always worked. Even with the kitten we adopted off the street.

You only do this when they have messed on the carpet or anywhere they shouldn't have, this is a sign to the that they have been naughty. To get your cat to go in the litter tray, just be persistant and place them gently in the tray they will eventually realise that this is where they are supposed to go.

You do that to dogs, not cats. If you see your cat using the potty somewhere it shouldn't, just hurry and pick it up and rush it to the litter box. They learn pretty fast and it will "get it".

Hannah C, based on your previous questions, you seem to be kind of obsessed with your kitten's bathroom habits. Cats *naturally* use the litter box, there is no need whatsoever to put their noses in it, they know where to go. Make sure it is clean, and in a quiet, private place and you shouldn't have problems.
