Pooping on the carpet instead of the cat box2007-11-25 12:25:09

Our 6 month old kitten has had a recurrent problem with pooping on our dining room carpet. He started out using the litter box but then began to use the plants, then the dining room floor. I have researched, talked to vets, etc etc and don't know what to do. We did finally put newspapers down with red pepper on them and that stopped him until I picked them up after a couple of months. Now he is doing it again. I don't think he's doing this to be mean. He just seems to like this area and of course now it is marked by that scent. I can't replace my carpets and I don't want to give him away but I have to stop this. Any ideas?

cats have a natural instinct to bury their waste,if they don`t there is something wrong with them. I would get rid of it.

-Put plastic or newspaper on the spot again - keep it there for four or five months before you remove it and see if the habit has finally been broken.

-Place a litter pan on the spot. If he uses it well for two or three weeks, slowly (about three inches every three or four days) move it to a place that is more convenient.

-Simply provide a second litter pan near the first and not under the table. Lots of cats like to urinate and defecate in different places.

-If your litter box is hooded, remove the hood. Defecating requires the cat to stand higher than urinating; he may be uncomfortable pooping in the covered pan.

-Give him a treat any time you see him defecating in the litter pan.

One of my cats does this now and then. I have her mother and brother (used to have another one of her brothers but he died) and also, I had a 20-year old cat who recently passed away. In a house with multiple pets, I finally figured out that this particular cat was needier than the others so I have to spend extra time with her every day. If I go a few days and don't give her extra attention, I find a little pile of poop on my living room rug. She is a cutie though. She hasn't done it in quite a while now so I must be giving her the attention she needs.
i would put some pepper or something that stinks on the spot where he likes to poop, then see if he tries poopin there again..lol
Sometimes cats do this when they think that their litter box isn't clean enough. Did you have another cat that this box used to belong to? If you did, that may be a problem.
