Researching Cat Breeding in Ireland

Researching Cat Breeding in Ireland2007-11-25 12:25:14

Could anyone tell me about the regulations regarding commercial cat-breeding in Ireland. Do you need a licence? What breeds are popular, common, hard to get etc? Where can one buy breeding cats and how much do they cost? Anything one should know about starting off in the business. Thanks.

Answers:

You contact some of the rescue agencies, or check out the magazine called the Dealer as they sometimes advertize pure-bred cats for sale and that way you may be able to contact breeders direct. I'm not sure if the Dealers website is a .com or .ie but, good luck with your venture, I'm always on the lookout for a long haired kitten for sale.

Don't do it. Rescue of few poor cats off the streets instead or get involved with a good cat rescue centre. So many already need homes and most people would want a pet for free.
Check an animal shelter or go to www.petfinder.com they have all a huge selection of breeds!
Contact the Governing Council of the Cat Fancy of Ireland. (look up gccfi on the internet) As someone has already said, there is a huge problem with stray cats in Dublin. There are many animal welfare organisations that struggle to keep going. Maybe you would consider helping one of them? For example, check out www.catsaid.org - we desperately need help. Thank you.
If you are thinking of getting into the cat breeding business, perhaps you should start off researching the pet overpopulation problem in Ireland that breeders contribute to and ask yourself if you really want to contribute to this tragic problem. Instead of producing more cats, maybe you can find a creative way to start a rescue organization for purebred animals and find them good homes and charge for the cats you rescue.
