First rule.NEVER run! This will tell the mountain lion you are prey and it will chase you down and likely kill you! You are supposed to make yourself look bigger, open up your jacket if you are wearing one, put your arms over your head, wave your arms if necessary. Yell at the moutain lion, let it know you are a threat. If this does not work, you need to throw something at it, rocks or sticks (but keep in mind, when bending down to pick up such items, you do not want to look small, so don't stay down there too long, try to bend but don't squat). Hopefully at this point it will run away. If not, than back up slowly, never turn your back on the animal and get as far away from it as you can. If the mountain lion has cubs..you do NOT want to do the whole arm waving bit, or looking bigger as this may cause a protective mother to attack..the last thing she wants is a threat when she has cubs.in this case back up and get out of there. Only if she approaches you and makes agressive moves towards you do you then try the looking bigger approach, rock throwing etc.
