Should I get a new cat now, or should I wait2007-11-25 12:25:51

I lost my cat very unexpectadly this past Monday morning (he had a heart condition I didn't know about). So, I have been very sad and lonely. I will get another cat at some point fairly soon, but my mother has suggested getting one as soon as possible, even this weekend. Part of me thinks that's a good idea; it will give me something to keep me occupied and someone to keep me company. But part of me really feels like I'd be "cheating" on the cat that died. I did my weekly cleaning today (sweeping, vacuuming, laundry, etc.), and part of me really felt like I was erasing him from my life as I cleaned up his fur and litter. So, what should I do? Should I take some time to mourn, or should I get a new cat as soon as possible to help fill the void in my life?

Answers:

First I want to say I am sorry to hear about your loss. It is a horrible thing to have to go through and my thoughts are with you. Next, a new cat will never erase what you had with your other cat. You will always have that time with that other cat and I hope you will always treasure it. If you feel like you are ready to move on then by all means get another cat. You hopefully will be helping an animal out in need and it will some how maybe ease some of the pain. I always attribute my ability to love another cat to my former cats and find that it is a tribute to my former cat to love another. Some people need a little more time and I understand that also. What I have done in the past is go to the local shelter or look at kittens or cats when I am thinking about getting another and sometimes there is that one special one that reminds me of my other one or is so completely different that I have to take it home right away. Please consider all aspects but I hope you find one soon to love and give the love in your heart to. Once again my thoughts are with you! :)

I would definetly wait. You need some time to get over losing you cat. Sorry about your loss.

This is pretty common, but I would personally say you should get another one. I think it would make ur other kitty happy that u arn't being alone becasue he's gone.

I would also wait a while. One of my rats died, I cried for 3 days, and a week later I got another. Take some time to remember your cat. Hope you feel better!!

Well i think its entirely up to you, but i dont think there would be anything wrong with getting a new cat as long as you dont think its the same cat and give him the same name no animal is the same..
