Sick Cat Please help2007-11-25 12:25:54

I have a female cat, about seven months old. She has not been gaining any weight, very thin (bones showing.) She only weighs about a pound and a half, if that. She was the runt and has always had a runny eye, but recently we noticed that she is only about half the size of her brother from the same litter, and never wants to play anymore. Her coat feels oily. She also seems to not want the litter box, although we have done everything we can to get her to use it. (We even have three litter boxes in case all the cats have to go at the same time.all in non-stinky areas.) I am taking her to the vet, but I can't get the money up for another week. Does anyone know what could be wrong and what I could do to ease her suffering?

It sounds like your kitty is very sick, but I guess you all ready new that. :)

I agree with the rest of the answers that you should find out if your vet will accept a later payment (many practices will hold a check for you in accordance with a payment agreement ), which many practices will do in the case of an emergency. The best thing to do is ask.

Another payment option is something called Care Credit. It's a credit card that can only be used for medical expenses, which does include veterinary costs. You should make sure that the vet hospital you are going to accepts Care Credit if you qualify for it. Care Credit's website is: http://www.carecredit.com/

Treating her at home will be very difficult. It sounds like she's not eating or drinking which means you may need to syringe feed her, but this comes with risks if you are not instructed on how to do it correctly (she could aspirate the food, you could get clawed, etc.) I really wouldn't recommend doing this without instruction. She may be dehydrated, so try to get her to eat watered down canned food and keep offering her fresh water. In my experience, it can be VERY difficult to get a cat that won't eat to eat on his/her own.
