What are the symptoms of a cat with a thyroid condition2007-11-25 12:26:33

My cat will eat small portions when given small portions.when self feeding.he will eat I guess toooo much and purge..He will occassionally purge a hairball..my vet suggest that the thyroid my be not functioning properly

Possibly but also look into other conditions such as kidney problems. The symptoms described sound about right for a bad thyroid but ou should just make sure there is nothing more serious.

The eating style your cat has , has nothing to do with thyroid problems. If that is all you vet is basing his idea on, get a second opinion.

Thyroid problems in cats take 2 forms, over active and under active.

Both are diagnosed with a BLOOD test, not an eating observation.

When a thyroid is over active, cats loose weight, have dry hair, are very active, and pace around the house 'howling'. They also may have bumps on their thyroid gland.

When a thyroid is under active, cats get hugely fat, are very docile,their hair is often greasy and they seem 'depressed'.

Some cats are just pigs. Some foods have flavor enhancers to encourage over eating.

Get a second opinion and a thyroid panel blood test, along with a standard health panel. (blood test)

Well, CATalog this problem as a CATastrophe. These things are often a deliCATe situation. The problem might stem from a CATaract. If I was your vet, I would recommend a CATscan and if the unfortunate happens and he dies, you should bury him in a CATacomb.

Cats are seldom hypothyroid, dogs more commonly have that condition. The excess thryroid hormone in the cat's system causes increased heart rate, very high metabolism and strains kidneys, liver, etc. and can really cause an early death from the multiple things going on in the body.
