Fat and moisture are essentials for good elimination. If you feed your cat only dry food you are depriving it of the moisture it needs for good elimination. Sometimes a little butter will help. That's butter, not margarine. Cats like it and will happily lick it from your finger.

See if using a good brand of canned food for 50% of his diet will help. Natural Balance is an excellent canned food and I am finding it at our local pet discount store. NB has many different varieties, a chicken and liver, a venison and pea, a turkey and giblet. I always add about a teaspoon of filtered water to any serving of canned food..

You can get a product called Laxatone from your vet or at any pet store. Its a thick, sticky paste that some cats will lick right off your finger. If they don't seem to like the taste you can smear it on their mouth or on their paw. The cat will groom itself and injest it that way. It will help your cat poop and also helps with hairballs too.

Agreeing with Old Cat Lady (again, we're often on the same page concerning this); wet food should be given at LEAST once a day to help ensure your cat is getting enough fat and moisture.

As far as helping things along now; pumpkin (real stuff, not pie filling which is too high in sugar), baby squash, and butter all help slick up the intestines.

Cats don't eat grass to help pass poop, they eat it to help get hairballs up. That being said, if your cat is an indoor only cat, it would be a good idea to get a pot of cat grass for him/her to munch on.
