What features are UNIQUE to a Maine Coon cat
My newly adopted kitten (rescued cat) I am now certain is a maine coon or a maine coon cross, because he has all the features and personailty traites that match. however, is there anything physical that is unique to this breed that i should look out for?
Answers:There are many Domestic Shorthair cats (mixed breed cats) that look like Maine Coons. They are actually a fairly average looking long-haired cat, except for their size. Purebred cats are generally so expensive & well-protected (kept strictly indoors & sold with spay/neuter contracts unless show cats) that very few get out & have 'mixes' like happens with dogs, so the chances are slim he is anything other than a Domestic Longhair. Enjoy his uniqueness for what it is!
Maine Coon is solid, rugged, and can endure a harsh climate. Particularly distinctive is its smooth, shaggy coat.
Medium to large; muscular; broad-chested; body should be long to create a well-balanced rectangular appearance.
Medium width and length; square muzzle and high cheekbones; chin firm; nose medium long, slightly concave in profile.
Large; well tufted; wide at base, tapering to appear pointed; set high and well apart.
Large; wide set; slightly oblique setting with slant toward outer base of ear. Color should be shades of green, gold, or copper, but blue and odd-colored eyes are acceptable in white cats. No relationship between coat and eye colors.
