What should I do for my cat2007-11-25 12:28:51

Saturday night at around 8:30 my cat had one kitten. 9/28 was the day when we got Mama and Shadow (Mama's 4-6 month old kit) into our garage (They were strays, but they have been around our neighborhood since June, and we've been feeding them since then). We built each of them a cage, and the cages can be closed and still joined so that they can get to each other. I also built Mama a "fort" because she didn't like to be in her cage with the newborn. Mama hasn't tried to move her baby yet, but I'm prepared if she does. The baby can't get out of the box unless Mama moves it. Questions- Is it rare/possible for a cat to only have one baby? Do I need to help Mama with the baby at all? When can I start holding the baby? We have an apt. to get Mama and Shadow spayed, but will it take away her milk or something so that she cannot nurse the newborn?

We are taking them all to the animal shelter.

Well, if Mama is used to you and doesn't get nervous around you, you can pick up the kitten from day one. You should get the kitten used to being handled by people. Reassure Mama while you're holding her kitten. Tell her she's a good Mama, etc., and pet Mama while you're holding her kitten the first few times.

Get Shadow neutered ASAP! You're going to have to wait to get Mama spayed until her newborn nurses for at least 6 weeks (unless you want to bottle-feed). My vet even had me wait an additional week to make sure that my mama cat wasn't still full of milk. Don't forget to wean gradually so that she's not so uncomfortable.
