Whats a good way to keep a cat from urinating in houseplants2007-11-25 12:29:48

I have a housecat that won't stop using house plant pots for the litter box.

How can I retrain it to not do that? I have already tried animal repellent and cactus!

Hi Joe.consider using Citronella spray (found at any pet store) combined with laying tin foil loosely over the soil surface. Cats find the citronella quite revoltingly strong and the foil disturbing as it feels unstable under their feet. Citronella is not harmful to plants nor cats so long as it isn't used to squirt them, which could sting their eyes. I've also placed double-sided tape on the foil for added insurance since cats truly dislike being stuck to the tape. The foil makes such a racket as well that it is added benefit when they are trying to shake loose from the tape stuck to the foil.

maybe new dirt or new pots, or new plants.

Once they do it one time, the scent (to them) is always there.

keep it outside
use crumpled alum foil or alum pie dishes. they don't like the foil.
for real, PINE CONES. real ones. they WON'T like that. worked for my cats. :)
not have a house plant! or put orange peelings in the pot or atleast thats what i heard
give it a litter box and clean it daily

also throw a shoe at it if it goes for the plants

Wash off all traces of urine from before!
