Compare with Natural Balance, 34% protein. $1.66 per pound. chicken meal, brown rice (that's rice WITH the bran), duck, lamb meal. Other good brands are Solid Gold Katzen Flocken, Chicken Soup for the Cat Lover's Soul, Eagle Pack, Innova, Eagle Pack, CA Natural (36% protein, $2.40 per lb.)

So if you pay less than $2.00 more a month you can have a really superior food for your cats.

Grocery stores don't usually carry higher end cat or dog food, the best you will be able to find is probably Purina Cat chow, I wouldn't recommend buying anything lower than that, most generic grocery store brands have a high ash content that can cause serious health problems later on.

I feed my cats IAMS, which is available at most large and small pet stores.

science diet is said to be the best, but if its a little to expensive for you here are some other options. Look at the foods contents. If the first ingredient is a meat than its better for them than if it were rice or corn. That means the food is made mostly of meat, and not a filler. We dont really think of this but why give them a corn or rice based diet when they are not cows and we dont see them out grazing. I like Iams, its not as high cost and my pets love it. Of course not all foods are good for all animals. If you want you could probably call your vet and get their advice over the phone, I have before. (OLD ROY is the worst to feed any animal, its all fillers!)

IAMS is fantastic. yes, it is more expensive, but since cats get more nutrients out of it, they eat less of it, and it lasts longer than cheaper brands, so basically you end up paying the same ammount, and have healthier cats.

also, vets recomend giving your cat one tablespoon of wet cat food twice a day. the wet food helps them get nutrients they can't get otherwise, and also helps them not to become dehydrated.

NEVER get catfood with seafood in it. the mercury levels that all fish have nowadays wrecks havoc on your cats immune system. any good vet will tell you this.

IAMS is one of the ones my vets have recommended. It used to be available only at vet clinics. I have used it for my cats since the first one. Now we can buy it here at Safeway and Walmart and Zellers.
