Whats the best kind of kitty litter, and why2007-11-25 12:29:08

We got a new cat, and we've started using clay clumping kitty litter. However, I've heard that clay isn't good for cats.why is that? What's the best kind to use, to cut down on the smell and to avoid our cat tracking it all over the floor?

I am fond of the crystal stuff. Not the litter with just crystals in it.but the stuff.I believe it is Tidy Cat that is JUST white with little blue flakes in it. I heard it was harder to get your cat used to that over regular litter (cause their instincts tell them to use litter.) but my cat made the switch really easily. And that stuff CLUMPS hard without any smell. It DOES cost more.but with one bucket of the litter, you can use it about a month. As long as you scoop out the poop often and then you kinda stir the urine in with the crystals.it is the only litter I have ever used that I don't think stinks like amonia when I use it.Remember though.it IS expensive but it lasts a whole month.

(FYI.if you DO decide to try it out, my vet origionaly told me to cut it with regular litter.like put half and half. Then a week or two later, put in more crystals and scoop out more of the regular litter.and then at the end of the month, go with 100% crystals.that way it gets them accostomed to the new stuff and doesn't make them feel the need to "find" their regular litter.). But like I said, I just poured it in the litter box and she used it without a problem.

The best kind is the kind your cat likes. We use clay and have no problem. I don't like the clumping kind. However when they had surgeries, I used paper litter.
