Whats the deal with cats & mirrors
I have three cats and out of the 3 only 1 seems to be able to see itself and reacts to its reflection in the mirror.
Are some cats unable to see their reflection and if they are able to, do they recognise that the reflection is them or do they think its another cat because my cat scowls and tries to attack its reflection sometimes.. :-S
Answers:my cat definitely sees his reflection in the mirror - he does think it's another cat. Some of the rooms in the flat I rent have glass pane doors, and he spent the first couple of months gently approaching his image, going around the door, and calling the cat whom he saw on the other side to come out of hiding.
He also sees my reflection in the mirror, and when he catches my gaze in the mirror, he will infallibly look at me outside the mirror, to verify I'm really there. He may even walk to me to smell me.
Oh, he also is sometimes very funny when he sees his reflection in his drinking water - he may spend a minute adjusting his head position so that the cat inside isn't bothering him, and then drink with his eyes closed. He may even growl at the other cat.
yes some cats don't react and some do!! strange innit.
U can ask a vet when u send ur cats 4 regular checkup next time..
maybe the other 2 are vampire cats? I would try them with garlic to be doubly sure, if that repels them, drive a wooden stake through their hearts to save your souls.
Really fun to watch cats as they discover their reflection! Brings a smile to my face just thinking of it!
Cats can't recognize themselves in a mirror.
They are unlikely to focus on the reflection, but if they do, they won't be able to associate themselves with the reflection that they see. This is why one cat scowls at the strange creature looking back at it!
My cat used to do that when he was a kitten, but now he sort of lazes infront of the mirror and admires himself.I don't know why cats do that, perhaps they think it's another cat and want to fight or play..?
mine don't like mirrors and don't look at them, if they do they don't react just move away. they seem to not know that it's them, or if they do they're not impressed. perhaps they had an idea they were really humans.
