It helps clean their paws and stretch their muscles, and it looks like it just feels good to do it. If they're scratching someplace that you don't want them to, then get a scratching post, and rub a pinch of catnip into it. They'll get the idea soon enough. If you find one, get a scratching post wrapped with sisal rope - they seem to really enjoy that. We do the catnip bit with our cats, and I've gone through 2 sets of rope on one scratching post - they've shredded it.

Scratching what? You? Carpet? Furniture? Himself?
They're relieving tension as well as keeping their claws groomed.
Cats scratch to stretch ligaments. you'll notice even a cat who has been declawed still "scratches". It is also a way to "mark" their territory by leaving their scent.
Territory marking, claw sharpening, fleas? Instinctual behavior no doubt.

Is it annoying to you? Train it. Spray it with a water bottle.

Good luck.

Its just something cats do. They scratch for different reasons like sharpening their claws and that is a way they defend themselves if they ever get into a fight with other animals.
It is being a cat. You may controll sometimes where and when but they will scratch, after all , it part of being a cat. If you do not like it be a dog lover because a cat will allways be a cat.
That's one of the ways they mark their territory. When they scratch on something, they are saying "This is mine."
