Whats up with my cat2007-11-25 12:29:58

I have a two year old cat that REFUSES to pee in the litter box. She poops in it, but pees outside of it. What is going on, and why? How can I fix it? She DOESN'T have an infection.

Take kitty to vet to rule out urinary tract infection so you will know if it is medical or behaviour problem. When my cat was going outside litterbox, it was because he had crystals in her urine, which was painful, associated pain with litterbox, so she went somewhere else.

Vet said to buy another box, so now she can choose between a hooded and non-hooded box. Try putting her in the box a couple of times a day to see if she will go for you. She will learn to go there. My cat is 4 yrs old and hasn't made a mess in 1.5 months now after doing the above.

It's kind of odd, but sometimes a cat won't use the same box for both pee and poop. If your veterinarian has ruled out an infection, then the issue is definitely behavioral, of some sort. If she's not fixed, it could be marking behavior, also. Even if it is not an infection, the vet may be able to give you some good advice on how to best correct the situation.

this may sound bad - but it may be that when she pees in litterbox - the litter does not soak it up fast enough and gets her feet wet and dirty - (you know how cats like to stay clean) - try a different litter.if that dont work try to teach her how to use the toilet - it can be done.

If you are sure there is no medical reason (and it is the most frequent cause of this behavior) I think you must have two boxes for her. For some strange reason there are cats that like to have a box for poopies and a box for pee. That is the reason for the litterbox rule: # of cats +1. It could be that she would like her box cleaned more frequently. So those are two options for you to try.

There's something wrong with the litter or the litter box, most likely. If nothing about those have changed (the litter is the same as before as is the litter box, you aren't using something different to clean it with, you haven't moved it or changed the things around it), then it could be be her way of showing that she's pissed at you, literally as well as figuratively. Something you've done or someone who's around you has done. Or is doing.
