When I am around my 4 month old kitten, he meows each time I say something to him. Is he really talking to me in his language, or is he just showing affection? (His mother and brother were caught and eaten by something outside when he was 2 months old, so we have kept him in since then, and he is stuck like glue to me & my husband when we are at home.)

Answers:

I think cats who interact with humans do try to talk. I have discussed this with many friends of mine who have cats, and their cats meow much more than strays, especially when you talk to them, they sort of answer. And I think my cat has a special meow for different things, like when he is hungry, when he calls me, etc.

My year old cat does the same thing. It may seem like he's talking to you, but I'm pretty sure its just showing affection or that they want something. My cat seems to do it more when he's wanting to be fed. or to eat the thing that you are eating yourself ;D

Some of my six cats are quite vocal and we have little "conversations" together.

Cats in the wild don't meow. It is a behavior they pick up when they are with humans. Your kitten wants your attention and he has learned that you "listen" when he speaks to you.

This probably sounds so stupid but sometimes I think they ARE talking to you. Coincidentally my cat's entire family were eaten by the neighbor dog at my mothers house and before HE was, my mom asked me to take him. We named him Survivor. Whenever I talk to him he cries as well and one day I actually asked him," Can you understand me, cry once" and he looked at me, paused, and then cried once. I thought it to be quite funny. Normally he cries continuously but this time it was only once. I tend to want to believe animals can sometimes understand or have possibly been reincarnated as animals. I even asked him that too.
