You don't need to separate the mom from the kits at all and your vet should have explained this to you. The one thing to watch is that the kits don't suckle on the surgical site or otherwise molest it. If that happens, move them.

If the kits are under 6 weeks, they should be still nursing on her, or you should be giving them kitten formula milk.

How old are the kittens for one thing?

She should be able to go right back to them, but she might be feeling a bit weird and not want to go near them. They probably won't mind either way though. Best thing is to leave her near them and let her decide for herself. The very worst thing that could happen is that she could leave them alone and wander off.. Its best to try it anyway.
