When do cats usually "spit" their first hairball2007-11-25 12:30:31

For example, if youknow anyone witha a cat you can ask them when they got the first hairball. But if you have one then thats great, but please answer this question.

I have five cats and only one ever throws up a hairball, and that includes long-haired and short-haired cats. The cat who does this has a form of IBD where she vomits. She eats dry food in the morning and a raw meat diet at night. I feel pretty sure that if I gave her only the meat she would stop the vomiting and hairballs (about twice a week now).

Meat is the natural diet of the cat not dry food which has a much higher proportion of grain (corn in the low quality foods) that is indigestible for cats. The better dry foods have brown rice, pea, millet or oats for their "fillers" - more nutritious and more easily digestible than corn.

Try Eagles Pack, Natural Balance, Solid Gold, CA Natural, Felidae for foods that do not use corn as filler. They also have quality protein in their meat - not by-product meat.

They shouldn't have hair balls in the first place. Its not like a specific time they have one. If your dont brush them, they lick them selves, swallowing the hair.. then ta da!!

Some cats never do some do as early as six weeks or sooner. I have 8 cats. two are 3 years old and have never "spit" one. One is 6 and has regularly been leaving me presents since the day I got him as a kitten

Right around the time they learn how to groom and clean themselves. So I would say about.4-6 weeks old. Least my kitty did.

Hopefully never. Proper grooming and diet can usually prevent hairballs.

If you don't want hairballs in your house, always brush your cat! When the cat licks itself because it isn't clean, it swallows hair. Then it "spits" it back up.
