When do you feed a kitten adult cat food

When do you feed a kitten adult cat food2007-11-25 12:30:32

My kitten will turn 6 months in November, and I'm wondering when is the best time to change her kitten food to adult food. Thanks

I'll give you one more opinion. Noone is really wrong here, some cats eat adult food from the time they are kittens and still manage to survive. However, you want your kitty to do more than survive, right? or you wouldn't be asking this question.

Even though you cat has been spayed, she is still growing, inside and out. Apart from the fat content, the kitten food has more protein and some other vitamins, at a higher level than adult food. That is because kittens need more of some things than adult cats need.

I would keep your kitty on kitten food until she is about a year old, and then begin mixing in a small amount of adult food with the kitten food. Keep adding more adult food, until you have completely switched over. This will help to prevent diarrhea which can happen with an abrupt change of diet.

Heck, I have a 14 year old that I feed Royal Canin Baby Cat Formula ( a dry kibble not the kitten milk replacement ) because he was beginning to lose weight. We did all the blood work and different tests and there was no physical reason he was losing weight. Then I got a litter of kittens to foster and he started nosing into their bowl of dry food. He started to bulk up nicely. The vet explained that, just like people, as cats age, they sometimes don't process their food as effectively. So, at 14, he doesn't just need kitten food, he needs baby cat food. They are all individuals.

Usually you start switching their food over to adult food at one year. Your vet can tell you when your cat is ready though.
Once they are about a year old.
Ask your vet. Most will say at a year of age.however if you get a female fixed at the usual age of 6 months some vets will have you switch shortly thereafter so that the female does not become overweight. It all depends. The only real difference between kitten and adult cat food is the amount of fat. There is more fat in kitten food. I switch my females over after they are fixed. Males sometimes I keep on until they turn a year old.
That seems like a good enough age. Of course I'm not a feline nutritionist. Do a web search for cat nutrition.
I would wait till your kitten hits 9 months to 1year then switch good luck
My cat T'ggr was fixed at nine months after we got him from the shelter. The vet said feed him adult food. We did and he is not fat.
One year. ask your vet.
my cats were 7months old and i fead them moist with adlut food mixed and there about 8 or 9 months now and i have been feeding them adult cat food ever seen i have gotten them and now just by its self.
Usually at 1 year old is best. when you start switching over don't switch all at once . Mix it with the new and gradually change over.
Usually around a year of age, some like to give it a few mos after a year just for good measure.but a yr should do him just fine.
the best time is when they become at least a year old
Usually around 1 year of age.
You can change her food to adult food when she gets 1 year old.

Your vet should tell you this at her next check-up.

When it is a year old
i just got 2 new kittens, and according to my vet, they can start eating adult food after the 1st year. have fun.
