Where do feral cats go during the long Northern Winter season

Where do feral cats go during the long Northern Winter season2007-11-25 12:30:16Answers:

A lot of us here in the Midwest provide housing in our garages (boxes, crates, etc., lined with soft material and small enough so the kitty is warm when it's cold. We leave the garage door open about half a foot and barricade the area they sleep in. There is also a Feral Cat Society in the county I live in. This group picks up feral cats, gets them spayed/neutered for free, and provides any medical assistance they might need. Then they find homes for them. A great group of people indeed.

Usually they try to find an old barn or other structure when out in the country. The y also find shelter like any other wild animal in the winter. Could be a hole, a group of trees, just about anything will do when its cold to protect them from the wind and weather.
Anywhere they can. Under houses, to farms, wood piles,in cars, basements with holes..you name it!

But, they survive!

Anywhere they can find some shelter from the extremes. And I hate to say it, but, many many of them do not survive the winter, especially if it is an extremely cold winter.Winter is hard on the very young, the very old and any kitty with any type of illness. Please folks, spay or neuter your pets as a kindness to their future!
They fly south.
sadly most of them die in the winter time because it is so cold and they get very sick.
I can definitely answer that one. They all come to my house. My fault tho, coz I feel so sorry for them that I leave out food for them so that they can at least have a full tummy even if they are cold. Seriously, I know that one place that they find to winter is inside of culverts. Or perhaps deep down in a pile of hay or straw.
Cats are scrappy. They can always find someplace warm--an abandoned barn, a small cave, etc.--and live there. Even domestic cats can survive out in the snow and cold for a good while! (Although I wouldn't recommend it.)
In the north where it gets cold.most die. Cats cannot survive brutal -40 Celsius weathers well. If they do survive, they are in pain from frostbitten ears, tails and paws. They are also in great danger of getting caught inside car hoods trying to find a warm place to sleep. I volunteered at a no kill shelter and the animals that came in the winter made me cry.

Incidently, the cold weathers are why most northern cities dont have the huge feral cat populations/problems of places with warmer winters.

Oh, make sure if you are in the north to always hit yor hood of your vehicle before starting it up. That way if there is an animal huddled in the hood, they can escape before your engine starts with beside the fan being one of the only ways out.
