to how yorkies are to normal size canines. Thank you very much for your help. I have no children and live in a large house (such that the pets will have room to roam and have a space of their own). I also have two yorkies (one female, one male; both of kind and gentle temperament) who grew up around a cat. Also, is there a certain breed that is known for being more affectionate than others (doesn't have to be small necessarily--but that would be preferable). Thank you!

The Singapura is a smaller, small boned, lightweight cat that is also known to be extremely affectionate ( http://www.cfainc.org/breeds/profiles/si. ) . Actually there is such a breed as a minature cat. It is pretty much the same thing as a normal cat but with shorter legs.
there is such a thing as a dwarf cat breed.i don't know about there history though.you might do a back ground check on them before you get one.
The reason why dogs vary in size so much is due to selective breeding. Cats haven't been miniturized too much there is a breed called Munckins and they have short legs like dachshunds. At the shelter we see cats of all sizes. Female cats that breed at the first heat are usually smaller due to the pregnacy stunting her growth. I truly believe the cats rescued from shelter are the most affecinate, they know you saved their life! Most shelters will let you bring in your dogs too to see if the cat likes your dogs. My shelter adopted cat is only 6lbs and is a beautiful siamese persian cross, he loves my kids and dog!
Himalayans have very docile personalities, and when brought into a home at a young age, seem to love everybody.

P.S. They may look tremendous - but it's all hair, they tend to stay below 10 pounds when brought up healthy.
The only very small cats I have seen are strays. You could call your humane shelter and ask if they have any small mother cats with kittens.
I have had several breeds as pets and strongly recommend the Ragdoll as an affectionate pet but this is a large cat. My Ragdoll follows me from room to room and jumps up on my lap when I sit down. Believe me, I have never seen such a loving cat before.
