First - i want to applause catlady for her answer. (would have given her a thumbs up, but i can't as i'm in level 1).

Besides that: after raising oh-so-many cats in the last few years i can just say that cats have self respect. They let you pet them - when they want you to. They let you play with them - when they want you too.

A short while ago i came home and one of my cats came running to greet me, clearly happy that i returned. Midway she stopped - probably thinking "hey - i'm NO DOG, i have my respect to keep" - and started walking slowly, as if she doesn't care that i came back.

You have to work hard to earn a cat's love - but nothing this good is ever free.

Well, I wouldnt say all cats and not all the time. Cats are who they are not who you want them to be. They are not like dogs, they each have their own personality. Cats are normally lone pets. They dont need a lot of attention, I said a lot not none. So if you give them to much they may get mad and this is their way of telling you "Hey enough." I have had many cats and they only get that way when they just want to be alone.

Because people keep mistaking their cleanliness for fussiness, their quietness for sneakiness, their zen-like contentment for snottiness, and their ability to amuse themselves for proof they don't love anybody, and the fact that their pride does not allow them to do stupid tricks for stupidity.

Not all are, but some cats might have been mistreated by other people early in their life. Cats are smart and remember a lot, and if they get abused by one human they think all are like that and a bond needs to be formed. After that the cat will warm up and start being nice.
