Why are cats so crazy about fish, particularly canned tuna2007-11-25 12:31:36

My kitty comes running no matter where he's been whenever I open a can of tuna. Then he sits there and begs until I give him some. I always leave a little for him on the can and he licks it clean as if it were the tastiest thing in the world. This happens even after he's eaten all his own food. How come?

I am glad to hear you are only giving your cat small amounts of the human tuna. It is very addictive for cats for some reason and can cause serious vitamin deficiencies if overfed.

The tuna fish is one of the largest fish in the ocean and it is something no cat ever experienced in its evolution. So it remains a mystery why cats seem to love it so much. And the dangers of feeding too much are well documented.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! You cannot give your cat tuna. That can make your cat very sick. I read about this so I can know when I get a cat. I thought they could have it too but I read they couldn't. Its posion. Do not do that. And they like fish but buy snacks that have tuna that is harmful to them.

Have you looked at cat food? Smelled it? It's terrible. Of course he wants to eat something fresh and yummy. He eats the same crap every day with no variety and has no choice but to do so in order to stay alive.

It has a very strong smell, which is important to felines. Also, there is a good amount of moisture in fish, which is important because cats don't like (and aren't designed for) drinking water out of a bowl. Try some sardines canned in water. Your kitty will love sardines even more than tuna!

Not sure why but I had a dog when I was a kid that liked it too. I guess because a lot of cat food has the smell in it to a point and they know it is food.

Cats decide if something is good to eat based on its smell rather than its taste. Tuna smells strongly, so naturally a cat will want to eat it. It's good that you give your cat some tuna.it never hurts to spoil them a little!
