These cats were surrendered by lazy, neglectful owners who couldn`t be bothered to care for them let alone feed them a proper diet.

They have been caged and not allowed to exercise, or their owners gave them up because they eat too much.

Well the animal is probably fixed. Fixed animals tend to be a little on the heavier side. Plus the animal is properly fed, which means they have probably put on a little weight. They are couped up in a smallish cage for the majority of their day, so they do not get excersise or free roaming.

Because the type of person most likely to not be responsible for their cat and to do something like giving it to the humane society is the same type of person to buy really cheap food for the cat and not let it outside to play or exercise it inside by playing with it.

Also people are over feeding animals "treats" and dont' really pay attention to the diet fed to the animal.

for one they are well cared for, and for 2 most of the cats in there properly have not been cared for well in the past!! if a cat ever has to go with out food, the tend to over eat!!:)

because they have escaped their home for the first time and as soon as they got hungry hit up the first person they came accross. That person said "poor kitty" and turned the cat into the pound. The owner is not smart enough to check the pound or does not want to pay the fee to get their "stupid" cat back. My cat was missing a week before I went looking for her and when I called, they did not recognized her by my description. She was up for adoption by the time I got down and actually spotted her there.

Not sure what humane society you visited, but I haven't seen this where I live. To the folks up above spaying/neutering has nothing - absolutely nothing - to do with weight gain. A cat that is obese is obese for one reason and one reason only - it's owners overfed it! Indoor cats need exercise too. People that love their kitties don't relinquish them to shelters. And they provide them with lots of toys so they can get excercise. Anyway, that's my 2 cents.

Sometimes people feed their pets (no matter if dog or cat) what I call "grocery store food" which is not much more that alot of fillers, fat, sodium and sugars with not much nutrient. Then because the cat pukes or gets sick in another way they get rid of them by bringing them to the humane society. So that is why those animals need to be adopted before they are euthanized so that they will get a good home. Kittens are cute but there are so many adult cats that need good homes with people that will care for them properly. Good food, lots of affection and a clean litter box.
