Cats are natural hunters so they will usually go after anyting that moves. The red dot that the laser seems like a live animal to them so they go after it. Also it is bright and very noticable.

because they like to chase the laser, thinking that it's a bug or something that needs to be caught. cats are hunters, they like to hunt things, especially a laser because it's small.

cats eyes are much more sensetive to light than humans or even dogs, the light from a laser can actually throw them into an epilectic fit, don't use it!! I know it is funny to se them react but it is possibly harmfull to them///m not a vet but was told this.

Because it can move so twitchily that it attracts their attention. But I know cats that learned they can't catch it, so they ignore it. My cat, on the other hand, made her own fun. She was jumping at nothing at all for a while before I realized she was jumping at my shadow on the wall as I moved around.

I know what you mean about going crazy, but not all cats will do that. We have one that goes mental over a light like that, or if you have a CD and it catches the light, or sunlight reflecting on the wall. But the other cats don't pay any attention to that kind of thing. I don't know why the difference.
