All these answers are correct, though the grooming habit is sometimes the most heartwarming.
Cats do like the salty taste, but not as much as dogs. Cat's salty receptors are not as pronounced in cats as they are in dogs. Most commonly, cats lick their owners because they love them and see them as a part of their pack. Communal grooming is hardwired into felines since it is an essential behaviour in the wild to completely eliminate all traces of bloodscent on their fur if they are to hunt successfully the next time. In the domestic cat, the behaviour from feline to human is simply an expression of devotion. My little cat Bilbo is constantly cleaning my moustache & beard, but he does it a little more vehemently after I've eaten dinner!
Since cats have those raspy toungues designed for stripping flesh from bones, it can be painful. I have found that the best response is to return the favour and pet the cat to the point that he or she relaxes and takes the attention rather than giving it. Whatever you do, never scream, yell at, or punish a cat for this behaviour! It is all an expression of love.
