in the cat world butt sniffing is the equaivalnt of shaking hands to you and me. cats wont remember each other as much by sight as by smell. its their way of saying HI how ya doin.

As has already been stated, it's a matter of greeting and territory. It was hilarious watching Blaze try to sniff Lotus' butt every 5 minutes after we brought her home. She didn't much care for it, either..he kept getting a hiss, and a swift smack in the face. I kept picturing her screaming "MASHER!" Hehehe.
