Why is my 8 yrs old cat all of a sudden pooping in my plants2007-11-25 12:32:53

This cat has no other history of doing this. Mainly an inside cat

It could be instinct. Before cats were pets they may have used dirt for their business. I've heard of the orange peel remedy also.

Also, check with your vet. A cat may sometimes start a new behavior if they are sick. It's the only way to let us humans know that there is a problem. Unfortunately, many times we don't understand them. A vet may be able to understand things we don't.

put orange peel round your plants to stop your cat doing that. And provide a litter tray with good quality litter

it probaly takes it as a litter box spray a srong scent on your plants and you shoudnt have that prob anymore

have u changed the soil recently?? cats LOVE fresh soil and earth and will happily plop all day long in it. Why not get a litter tray, fill it full of compost earth or grass and let him have it to his self. change soil reguarly and they might leave your plants alone. He will love it too as it doesn't go out much.

usually when a cat changes their toilet pattern its for a stress reason. Have u moved, changed litter brands, brought a new animal or even a child into ur home recently? Any of these things could cause ur cat to use the plants for a box.

The cat poops in the plants because there is exposed soil or otherwise granular material. It is the same reason they poop in the litter box. It is a cat's instinct to go to the bathroom in sand or dirt and then bury it. A litter box simulates a location that a cat would normally poop in and that is the only reason they use it and also why they don't have to be trained to use it. They just have to be shown where it is. If your cat didn't poop in the plants before it's either because he didn't think of it before for whatever reason or because something with the plants or the litter box changed. Environmental changes have a strong effect on cat's behavior.

How often do you clean the cats litter? Did you change kitty litter recently? How accessible is the litter? Some cats get really really finicky with age. She could be suffering from litterbox aversion. My cat would do this everytime I left her for extended periods of time or when a new girlfriend stayed the night.
