Why is our pregnant barn cat hissing at her 12 week old kitten she had in her first litter2007-11-25 11:44:16

Our barn cat had kittens! We kept one of them to live with her in the barn. The kitten is now 12 weeks old. The mother cat looks pregnant again and hisses when ever her 12 week old kitten gets near her.

She is probably trying to wean it and make it become independent. It's natures way mode of "tough love". This is most likely the case especially if she is pregnant with another litter and would not want the kitten nursing on her so she can save up nutrients for the litter inside her.

She is weaning the other kitten. Trust me I've had dozens of barn cats in my life and right now I have an ornery one. She'll keep this up but don't worry, when she isn't pregnant she'll be fine with him.

Not only what the other people say but cats don't have families when their kids are grown they are like just friends with them and they don't mate for life.

the kitty is old enough to go off on its own and thats what her mama is trying to do to get her away from her.

Cats personalities change when they are pregnant.Some cats get more friendlier and some get cranky.There hormones change just like a humans does when they are pregnant.Also sometimes after a kitten gets older the mom just treats it like any other cat.They don't always remember that this kitty was my baby.I am sure it is just her hormones though.
